State Bank of Southern Utah Match Play Tournament
May 31 – June 17
This year if we get more than 48 players signed up, the field will be divided into 16 four-player groups (some may have three-player groups if we have under 64 players). The maximum amount of players is 64, so this tournament will be open to the first 64 players who sign up and pay. Match play will take two weeks to complete. The first week (group play) there will be no weekly play for the Stubbs Insurance Cove View Cup. The second week, when the match play tournament is down to the final 16 players there will be weekly play.
Players in the field will be assigned a seed number for the competition determined by their position in the Stubbs Insurance Cove View Cup , as of Monday the week of the tournament (May 27, 2024 – before weekly play for that current week). The highest ranked player in the field Seeded #1, and the lowest ranked player in the field Seeded #64. The top 16 players will be the top player in each of the 16 groups. So the No. 1 seed is the top player in Group 1, No. 2 seed is the top player in Group 2 and so on. The remaining players in each group will be picked randomly, and placed in a pool, live at the golf course, on Thursday night at 6:00 pm.
During group play, players play 9 hole matches against each of the other players in their group. Matches will be played to a conclusion (no halves).
Group Play (Round Robin) matches will be played from Friday, June 2nd – Saturday June 10th. Get in contact with the other players in your group to schedule your matches. If you are unable to get in touch with an individual in your group the following are tee times for each group play match.
Match 1 – Thursday, June 6th, – 5:30 pm
Match 2 – Friday, June 7th – 5:30 pm
Match 3 – Saturday, June 9th – 5:30 pm
The player in each group with the best record at the end of group play will advance to the 16-player, single-elimination matches. In the event two or more players in a group have the same record, the winner of the head to head match of the individuals will advance. If we have a tie in a POD of only three (3) players, a stroke play hole-by-hole playoff will determine the player that advances to the 16 player, single-elimination matches. (All three players will play at once).
If needed, the group play hole-by-hole playoffs will be conducted on Saturday, June 10th at 5:30. Group play hole-by-hole playoffs will start on the first hole and play holes 1 through 18 in sequence and repeated if necessary.
Single-elimination matches – 9 hole matches played to a conclusion. No halved matches. Matches all square after 9 holes will be extended until a winner is determined.
Round of 16 -Monday, June 10- Tuesday, June 11 – Eight matches (16 players) on the front 9- winners advance to Round of 8/quarter-final matches. Matches all square after 9 holes will be extended on holes 10 through 18 and repeated if necessary until a winner is determined.
Round of 8 – Wednesday, June 12- Thursday, June 13– Four quarter-final matches (eight players) on the back 9- winners advance to Final Four/semi-final matches. Matches all square after 9 holes will be extended on holes 1 through 9 and repeated if necessary until a winner is determined.
Final Four – Friday, June 14-Saturday, June 17 – Two semi-final matches (four players) on the front 9 – winners advance to the championship match. Matches all square after 9 holes will be extended on holes 10 through 18 and repeated if necessary until a winner is determined.
Championship Round – Monday, June 19 – Championship match (two players). 18 holes – Matches all square after 18 holes will be extended on holes 1 through 18 and repeated if necessary until a winner is determined.
Point Allocation
You receive the number of points of the round you were eliminated in. You will also receive five (5) bonus points for every match you win in group play. All participants will earn at least 15 points. Round of 16: 30 points. Round of 8: 45 Points Final 4: 60 Points Runner Up: 80 points Champion: 100 Points
Match Play Glossary
Match Play: Match Play is the game played by holes instead of by strokes.
Reckoning of Hole (status of match): Reckoning of holes is kept by the terms: so many “holes up,” or “all square” and so many “holes to play.”
Halved Hole: A hole is halved when each side holes out in the same number of strokes.
All Square: A match is all square when each side has won the same number of holes as the other side, or when each hole has been halved.
Dormie: A match is dormie when a side is as many holes up as there are holes remaining to be played.
Concession of next stroke, hole or match (Rule 2-4): When the opponent’s ball is at rest or is deemed to be at rest under Rule 16-2, the player may concede the opponent to have holed out with his next stroke and the ball may be removed by either side with a club or otherwise. A player may concede a hole or a match at any time prior to the conclusion of the hole or the match. Concession of a stroke, hole or match may not be declined or withdrawn.
